The order the ground gets built

  1. 1. Set the pad elevation. Above the surrounding grade, with the ground sloped away.
  2. 2. Cut, fill and compact. Fill that is not compacted becomes a cracked slab later.
  3. 3. Drainage. Where does roof runoff and hillside water go once the building is in its way?
  4. 4. Posts and footings. Holes, crushed stone, backfill.
  5. 5. Vapor barrier, reinforcement, pour. Then the approach and apron.

Slab decisions that matter

4-inch vs 6-inch

Four inches is the default and it is plenty for cars, light trucks and a workbench. Six inches earns its cost under real load: a tractor, a loaded RV, a two-post lift anchored through the floor, or a dump trailer parked full. It is common to pour six inches on the drive lanes and the equipment end and four inches on the rest.

Thickened edges

The perimeter and any interior line that carries load gets a deeper section of concrete. It costs little at pour time and it is what keeps the slab edge from breaking down where the wheels cross it.

Rebar vs fiber mesh

Fiber mesh is mixed into the concrete and helps control shrinkage cracking across the surface. Rebar is placed on a grid and gives the slab real structural continuity — it is what you want under heavy loads, lift anchors and thickened sections. They are not interchangeable, and a quote that swaps one for the other is not the same slab.

Vapor barrier

A sheet under the slab keeps ground moisture from moving up through the concrete. Skip it and you get damp floors, sweating in humid weather, and coatings or flooring that will not stick. If you ever plan to heat, insulate or finish the space, it is not optional.

Frost depth in Springfield

Frost depth here is 24 inches. The accessory-building exception: footings need not extend below the frost line for structures up to 600 sq ft of light-frame construction with eaves 10 ft or less, or 400 sq ft of other construction with eaves 10 ft or less. Most real shops exceed both, so plan on the 24-inch depth unless your building is genuinely small and short.

Water, approach and apron

Pad elevation matters more than most people expect. A building set level with the yard becomes the low point the first time a storm runs across it, and that water sits against the posts and comes in under the door. Building the pad up a few inches and sloping the ground away is cheap insurance.

The approach — the drive from the existing surface to the door — and the apron in front of the openings get priced separately from the floor. Skipping them means you back a trailer off concrete onto soft ground at exactly the spot with the most traffic.

Slab and site prep questions

Do I need a 6-inch slab or is 4 inches enough?
Four inches handles cars, light trucks and normal shop use. Go to six inches where you park heavy equipment, run a lift, or drive a loaded RV. Many buildings use both: six inches on the drive lanes and equipment area, four inches everywhere else.
Do footings have to go below the 24-inch frost line?
Springfield's accessory-building exception says footings need not extend below the frost line for structures up to 600 square feet of light-frame construction with eaves 10 feet or less, or 400 square feet of other construction with eaves 10 feet or less. Anything larger or taller follows the 24-inch frost depth.
Why does the builder care so much about pad elevation?
Because water only moves downhill. A pad set even with or below the surrounding grade collects runoff at the door and along the posts. Building the pad up and sloping the ground away from it is the cheapest water problem you will ever solve.
